TASK 10

Critical Reflective Practitioner

  1. What roles can you play as a "critical reflective practitioner?"

Broadly, being critical in education means to play an active role  in society promoting changes in specific settings. As critical reflective practitioners we have to help students know and get acustomed to what happens outside the school. As freire said to conect the word to the world. The main purpose of reflective teacher is to become learners in readers of their own reality seeing their social or political context, "influenced by the structures and workings of power that exist outside the classroom". This teaching role is called Teacher as “acculturator”

This role in teaching take into account students' perceptions and beliefs in relation with the place in which they live, the teacher socialize and support learners as social workers to be active agents in their communities. Raising awareness upon the role individuals should perform and how they can contribute to have a better environment.

  1. What conceptual distinction would you make among "poiesis," "praxisand "phronesis?"  which of these actions do you feel identified with?
The three concepts vary in their definition according to Yvonne Hillier, she said that Greeks defined Poiesis as the knowledge someone has to do or create something (a good or a product), but in the case of teaching she mentions that  as the action taken requires a deeper understanding and is concerned with ethical, social and political action, it is called praxis. Practitioners act in the world as to improve their particular situations.
Hillier claims that even when praxis emphasizes on commitment to action, it is not sufficient if the reflective practitioner is searching for the best way to act. Another approach emmerges to inform us about the appropriateness  of the decision or action we take, the Greek term is phronesis and is basically when practical knowledge is "defined as rightness of action".
As English teacher I am usually in search of the most effective way of teaching my students,  I try to consult different sources as to teach in a more practical way, However, I also have classes that are oriented base on the commitment I have with me labour. I believe Phronesis is definetly the correct term to define the consolidation of theory and practice in teaching.
